Dick Lee in New York City Singapore Day

See, I told you you can do anything when you’re overseas 🙂 So, which is more entertaining, Hossan Leong or Dick Lee? And which is more correct?

But what caught my attention is this (new?) unit called the Overseas Singaporean. Wait a minute – wasn’t there already a Contact Singapore that pops up like everywhere in job fairs and S’porean celebrations in US? Turns out that they are not related. CS is supposed to get people to S’pore, while OSU is PMO‘s attempt to keep the citizens themselves in touch when they go overseas.
Compare this with grass-root efforts like ReCom or commercial backed efforts like Global Malaysians (thestar, hey look, new king!) which one is better? Can/should a government micromanage communities?

  1. I must say I am always sceptical about these units or depts, whatever you call it, that seeks to reach out to Singaporeans overseas. In fact, I can’t even say for sure if this is a desperate attempt to win the hearts of overseas Singaporeans into coming back to Singapore. On the surface, things always seems noble and fair, but what’s the true agenda behind it we will never know.

While it is true that not all working overseas are on the intent of migration, it is also interesting to note in a survey several years back that only a mere 5% of those whom relocated elsewhere chose to turn back to our shores.

  2. Well, what I’m trying to say is that we can’t go around controlling people life decisions. There’s a reason why people migrate / go overseas for stints etc. and we should respect that. But so far, from combing their website I don’t see much persuasion, save threat, in trying to ask people to come back. It is phrased almost like it’s natural (otherwise you wouldn’t even bother looking at their portal perhaps).

    See how it goes like:
    Step 1 – go overseas
    Step 2 – call home
    Step 3 – make S’porean friends overseas
    Step 4 – come back
Step 5 – mission accomplished! target back paying SG taxes.

  3. dick lee was not at new york city singapore day 2007. unless this was a totally different one which has the same name, and performed at a different venue.

other than that… no other comments except ya, quite funny dick lee.
