Philwinds’ 10th Anniversary Gala Concert

Happy Birthday Philwinds

Come for The Philharmonic Wind’s 10th anniversary Gala Concert. No it’s not a gala concert like, with 10 course meal and getai. Just really picking deeper into the wind orchestra repertoire for rarely heard gems.

Learn more about the concert on philwinds’ website. Tickets are cheap, really (but I can’t afford another round of competition… unless someone wants to sponsor).

10 years ago, I came to philwinds for a grand total of 3 rehearsals, before I abandoned the group to further my studies in the US. I have no idea what happened to the group until about a month before I was about to ta pau and come back to Singapore, when again it showed up by means of friends simply welcoming me back. Because of their hospitality, I don’t know whether I should tell people that I joined philwinds since its inception, or since 2005.

Anyway, in these 5 years, some concerts were memorable, others, so so. What’s always memorable is when the supper crowd exceeds some critical mass (say 10 people), or when musicians from out of town come by, or when we venture to far flung places just to eat a tiny portion of supper. After all, the activity itself prohibits socializing, rehearsals are no-nonsense ordeals to perfect the (quoting Leonard today) tone, time, tuning and touch of the music that we will be delivering to the audience.

However, if there’s any part of me showing my age, it’s clearly my playing, and nothing shows it more than having to tackle philwind’s repertoire. Sometimes, I secretly hope that some young trombonist will just show up and inspire the section, and I can just let him/her take the lead and play bumper. That kind of old man thinking is dangerous, for a person still longing to get out of the rat race and look for a new life.

So if you think I’ve aged and that I should let it slide, then come for this concert before I cannot perform any more.

Otherwise, if you think I’m just rattling nonsense and that I’m just and young and youthful as ever, come for this concert to hear us out.

Get it? No buts, click on SISTIC link to buy tickets, and leave a comment for me to have a quick poll on the above question.
