Tips on Filling up Gas/Petrol

Thought it’s good to compile a short list without the long explanations to help keep in mind that:

The famous 4 that’s widely circulated on the web:

  1. Morning: When the ground is cold, the gas is dense, you get more
  2. Slow Mode: Minimize the vapour returns
  3. Half Full: Reduce the air space for petrol to evaporate
  4. No Truck: Fuel trucks stirs the fuel, passing the dirt/water to your car

Being one of those infamous forwarded tip, it accuracy is widely contested. Half Full is widely agreed. Cold ground theory might make sense in countries where the ground temperature varies drastically from morning to night. But in most countries there’s no vapour return nor slow/fast mode. And one would really hope that the mechanism for cleaning the oil tank should have prevented any unwanted sediments being passed into the tank, especially water since it’s probably common for water to seep in an underground tank.

Jiin Joo’s not so famous 4 (please circulate widely haha):

  1. No One: When you don’t have to wait for your turn at the petrol station, we save time, and fuel.
  2. Loyalty: Use the same company (preferably close to home/work) and find out all the discount / loyalty points!
  3. Gas Subsidy: Pump your petrol in JB when your tank is 3/4 full (if you stay in Woodlands), also make sense for the half-full theory.
  4. Invest: Invest in oil producing/processing companies to earn back the money you pay them.

  1. Your comment on morning verses later in the day is something I have contended for years. Underground tanks will not change much in temperature between morning and evening.

Filling your fuel tank when between 3/4 and 1/2 full makes sense on another level. When the fuel tank is low water can form on the sides of the tank do to condensation. Keeping the tank full at night will prevent this from happening.
