Come hear my music arrangements @ Philwinds Pops Concert 2010 (Dec 5)

Philwinds Goes Pop!

Be sure to grab tickets to Philwinds’ coming concert on Dec 5, where we will be playing some of the latest hits as well as evergreen classics from the pop arena – symphonic band style. We will again be working with local singers as guest artists, but mainly you’ll get to experience the full depth and colour of the symphonic band applied to songs you and/or your mother can sing 🙂

See the full brochure on The Philharmonic Wind’s website or get your tickets from SISTIC.

If you came for the last Philwinds Pops Concert in 2008, be sure not to miss this sequel. It’s also a sequel to Philwinds’ 10th anniversary celebrations, as well as on-going efforts to reach out and attract newer audience who rarely attend band concerts. It’s also a chance to showcase the virtuosity of one of the finest symphonic band in town.

And just as in 2008, as the stressed out arranger for the bulk of the music you’ll be hearing, yours truly guarantees you a rewarding and ear opening evening. You will hear your familiar radio tunes set to global cultures and instruments, acoustically expanded versions of electric music that’s commonplace today, as well as reprise of oldies that just gets better every year.

This will be my second time collaborating with the band that I’ve been with the longest (just recently surpassed that of CHS Band where I was in high school for 5 years) and it has certainly went smoother than the previous round, despite the shorter turn around time due to my work commitment. In fact the majority of the music has been written within the previous 2 months (vs some 4-5 months last time). However, this time we have consciously avoided pseudo-romantic non-laymen friendly passages in favour of a more singable, enjoyable style of presentation for most of the pieces. Hope you all will like it.

Also, I’m looking for more vuvuzelas to be used for the concert – if any one of you have one, can you lend it to me? I promise to take good care of it 😉

So get ready to sing and dance along (to the limits of the Esplanade Concert Hall seat) next next Sunday!

To Philwinds: a great thanks to Sin Yee for helping with some of the pieces, and also everyone’s input on what *you* want to play. As musicians, IMHO what you choose to play defines you more as a musician (similarly applicable to the collective group) than how well you execute every available wind band repertoire under the sun. Thanks for choosing to perform this old+new kind of work, because I think it will also help you share your musical life better with the people who care for you.
