TPO: 100 Years Later – The Firebird

TPO is 12 years old this year. Being in the industry of playing music that can sometimes be many centuries old, 12 years is a small step, almost like a new group that’s still undergoing growing pains. But that didn’t prevent the group from having some 100 years perspective, such as this upcoming concert: “100 Years Later – The Firebird”, where the orchestra will be performing the Firebird ballet score (substitute dancers for a charming narrator), as well as a commissioned work by one of the orchestra’s own bassist Emily Koh, name “After Igor”, well, after “Igor (Stravinsky)”.

This in itself is an interesting proposition – the idea is, if the orchestra commissions a work in relation with a work that was written exactly 100 years ago, then it’s possible that the same orchestra (if it lives till 112 years old) gets to commission a work after this work another 100 years later (such as, “After Emily After Igor”). Such goal settings that outlive every single orchestra member’s lives are rare, but worth celebrating, if it happens. In fact, with medical advances resulting in longer lifespans, it’s possible that a kid today who’s 7 years old (sorry, no admission to 6 years and younger) can attend the concert AND attend this concert again when he’s 107 years old, 100 years later.

But in reality, 100 years later, we’ll all be dead. So, why not come for this concert instead of waiting for another 100 years? I think both Igor and Emily would agree.

Btw, we’re still recruiting off stage trumpets for the project – Drop me a note asap if you’re interested!
