Inner Voices – Contemporary Malaysian Music

Ethnic Group and Modern Band – sounds familiar? If you have heard such a group doing some traditional melody on some nationalistic pretense, you probably have already brushed it off (I know, I tried putting chinese orchestra with marching band before, it was atrocious). However, consider taking a look at this:

Inner Voices a.k.a. Mamak Band

Let’s Go Mamak, an effort by 13 awesome dudes, is reflective of modern day Malaysian Music culture – heavily influence by a myriad culture and yet to find the right blend to be presented on a unified front. I’ll let their own promo material tell you the story, just want to say that this kind of exploration is admirable. Just think about how, say, the history of Chinese Orchestra came about – an effort to collectively make instruments from every part of the world come together to collectively articulate the soul of a nation (e.g. only 2 instruments in the CO are native Han, to the western audience, notice how cellos and basses are regulars?)
