This is one of those concerts that caters to both the sophisticated listeners (Sibelius, as we all know, is a revolutionary composer at the turn of the 20th century, hailing from Nokia land) as well as the casual ones who just need to look more atas to his or her date (Sibelius 2’s 1st and 4th movements are especially simple to listen and appreciate, and is one of his much celebrated symphonies for the romantic crowd).

In fact I would say this is the highlight concert of the 3 concert series, a co-presentation by TPO and Esplanade. Sibelius wrote 7 symphonies. Last Oct, we did 1 and 3, this time 2 and 4, then July 5, 6 and 7. Among those, 1 and 2 are closer to what was the Romantic era of classical music, to the likes of Tchaikovsky, Brahms and Mahler. So one can easily hear the stark differences between two distinct writing style, between the 4th symphony and the 2nd symphony in this concert.
