i-ACT 2007 – Stop Genocide Now

Remember Darfur? If you’ve read my last post, you would have seen their last trip there. This year, another bunch has headed down, including Yuen-lin, my hero. Read his plea:

Hello everyone,

I’m currently in Chad visiting some of the refugee camps that house refugees from the Darfur region of Sudan. A genocide has been going on there for a number of years, with the total death toll above 400K and the amount of displaced people over 2 million. Our mission is to use technology to connect people around the world with the people of Darfur at a personal level. The hope is that these relationships generate action that will bring about the safe return of these people to Darfur.

Please visit our website http://stopgenocidenow.org where we post daily videos and journal entries from the camps. You can post comments to us as well; we try to reply to each one 🙂 If you like what you see, please help spread the word.

Thank you!

Yuen-Lin

And watch a video (this is day 4):

Where is Darfur?

How can I help?

That one heck of a good question you have there! First, if you’re not an American, I want to first imagine that you’re one and check out these websites: Darfur Friday (of San Francisco Bay Area Darfur Coalition), Our Pledge, and of course, Stop Genenocide Now. From the most passive donation to some active lobbying in Washington DC, every little practical action you take is going to add up to a gigantic movement that will effect a large seemingly impractical change, especially in encouraging the US government to take steps help make international policy changes to save lives.

For the rest of us, education is what is going to make a difference. Send this blog post to your friends, read up about genocides and why they happen, understand the cause of the Darfur conflict, why is there a war, why no one is stepping in, why is there no end etc. It is not just the sheer scale of this genocide that’s the issue. Why is does the UN peace-keeping force fail? Why is the Sudan government is fueling the crisis? Who is actually gaining by supplying more arms? Who is actually losing? Does humanity, in order to enjoy global peace, have to see such sufferings in remote parts of the world?

Finally, if you are someone who actually can do something (maybe a Russian arms salesman or something), please do. Stop people from mass murder. Stop Genocide Now.
