What is .plan?

As part of the finger protocol, users on UNIX systems can learn more about another user on the system. When you “finger” another person, the finger protocol will know how to load your contact information and, if you have one, your .plan. Most people (mostly grad students and researchers in the beginning days of UNIX) will put their current research topics and results on their .plan (for the lack of a “homepage”), but as more users start getting connected, there are more junk and humor, some use it as a diary, others put ridiculously long .plans to blow away the terminal buffer.

Why do you have a .plan?

I found that I was losing focus. Don’t you think so?

Can I finger you?

Yes. Try.
