WordPress Upgraded!

And this post concludes my first ever wordpress upgrade of this blog – Ah fresh air 🙂

After being hacked 3 times on the old 2.0.5, I finally found time to upgrade. The upgrade itself wasn’t that hard. I’m marveled by the version control and the rigor built into the wordpress architecture such that even after 20+ not so standard plugins are added (including some garage-made ones by moi) the site still functions.

A few more weird corners and the blog should be back to its full functionality in the next few days.

In the mean time, I highly suggest that you read Matt’s article found on wordpress site about upgrading:

wordpress.org/development/2009/09/keep-wordpress-secure/

Between his argument on game theory (prisoner’s dilemma, the club versus lo-jack) and 400+ pings and comments lies the gem of the entire problem with security of any software: you’ve gotta be a moving target. Or in Matt’s words: The only thing that I can promise will keep your blog secure today and in the future is upgrading.. Every week I’ll peek at the Akismet spams that got caught and shake my head – they just won’t stop trying. After 4 years, 150,000 spam, and 3 hacks that inserts great amount of base64 encoded php code into every file in the system, they are still coming. And until we all find the Lo-jack solution to spam messages, another of such upgrading would come sooner than expected.

In the meantime, hope I can have some peace and quiet as I restart by blog engine. Haven’t been writing much in the past 2 years. I’m sure the coming 2 won’t be the same 😉

Btw, I’ve also succumbed to the SEO requirement of not reproducing the entire post on the front page. If this doesn’t make sense (it certainly does not for me: when you read people’s diary, you read it from page to page until you’re discovered), then I will consider bringing all 10 latest posts together on to one page.
