Office Ergonomics 101

Recently my right hand started to hurt – I think it’s the excessive use of the touch pad by resting the wrist. Quite sad, I plan to use computers till I’m 100!

Here’re some random “lessons” – no idea where it came from but certain looks credible don’t you think? 🙂

  1. Actually, I think that the stuff causing the most pain (at least in my case) are –

    1) Mouse – I use a trackball. Helps greatly. And I switch between using it with my left hand and my right.

    2) The spacebar key – Hurts my right thumb. I alleviate it by hitting it more with my other fingers, instead of my right.

    3) Bad typing positions – I don’t know if it’s right to type in such a penpendicular position. Remember the Microsoft Natural Keyboard? It broke the keyboard layout into 2 and angled them against each other. I tend to think that we should try to emulate that on a normal keyboard.

I think variety is the key. So switch between your left and right hands for mousing. Also, learn to type correctly so that load is spread evenly between all 10 fingers. Also, vary typing positions between the usual “pendicular” and the “angled”. Think this will help spread the load to different muscle groups.

After all, RSI stands for “Repetitive Stress Injury”. Repetition kills!

  2. brain control is the key! 🙂 soon we can just relax and think about what to type. and *poof* they will appear. hawkings will be pleased.
